A Message from Artistic Director Patrick McDonald
I am in my last few weeks as Artistic Director at Green Thumb Theatre, so I thought I would write a few words before stepping down as of December 31, 2020.
I have had the genuine pleasure and privilege of being the Artistic Director of Green Thumb since May of 1988. I began in this role a long time ago and well before most of the folks I work with were born. And yet, it seems like a very recent memory to me.
I am often asked to list my favourite shows and I can honestly answer, it is a long list that changes depending on how I am feeling. I will say I take great pride in the company's mandate and mission statement and how true we have stayed to course over three decades. I take further pride in our ability to have delivered some remarkable work to children, teenagers and young adults; a far-reaching audience base for any theatre company. I also love the fact that plays we created are now available in over seven languages and are regularly produced around the world.
But none of this would have been possible without the many remarkable technicians, artists, and administrators that I have worked with, and their commitment to creating the best work possible for young people. Over three decades you work with hundreds of people. What was rewarding for me is that we've created a place where both established and emerging artists can work together in creating the best work possible for our audience.
I want to thank our current Board of Directors for their support and give a special shout out to Board President Cheryle Beaumont and long-time members Victoria Henderson and Maureen McEvoy. Thank you. Many thanks to all of the people who have served on a Green Thumb Board since 1988. Your service is noted. I would also like to extend my deep appreciation to the funding bodies, foundations, and individual donors who have supported this company.
A huge thank you to the educators, counsellors, school administrators and support staff, and young audiences who are so integral to our work and share their time and curiosity with us.
And finally, a welcome to our new Artistic Director, Rachel Aberle. She along with General Manager Breanne Harmon will navigate the challenges we face due to COVID-19 and will, when the crisis subsides, create some remarkable theatre.
Welcome Rachel.
Happy holiday season to all. It is unusual for sure. Please stay safe.
Thank you all,
Patrick McDonald
